Sweeping Away the Confusion

If you’re an aircraft owner, I’m sure you’ve heard or read some things that just didn’t make sense. One mechanic says one thing; another mechanic says another. Or you will hear people say that the Federal Aviation Regulations are open to interpretation. Well, let me sweep away the confusion and explain it to you…

First, anybody who says the FAR’s are “open to interpretation” simply can’t read. The FAR’s are federal laws, written with words that have specific meanings. You cannot assign your own definition to a word written in the English language. That’s why we have the dictionary. Don’t point to a helicopter and call it an airplane; they’re not the same thing. Yes, reading the FAR’s can be a good cure for insomnia, but they must be read carefully to be understood. And I’m pretty good at reading technical documents. So, with that in mind, let me explain, in plain English, some of the commonly misunderstood topics…
